Jesus's Sisters
Question:
What were the names of Jesus Christ's Sisters? I cannot find them anywhere. -Pierre
Answer:
According to official Eastern Orthodox Apostolic Tradition, Jesus had only one sister, who was named Salome, the myrrhbearer. She was also the mother of James and John, who were two of the 12 apostles of Jesus. You may be aware that Joseph was a widower between 60-80 years old (depending on the tradition) when he married the Virgin Mary, so his children were much older than Mary. Joseph also had two other sons- Jude, who was another of Jesus's 12 disciples, and James, who became the first bishop of Jerusalem. So Joseph had three children altogether by his first wife, but he had no children by the Virgin Mary. The Catholic church may follow another tradition that speaks of another sister of Jesus, but I'm not aware of the details. -Gaius
